Our Towns - Just Beyond Yale, a Million Miles Away - NYTimes.com: "“That’s where they shot my nephew,” he says. He peers out at the Dixwell Mini-Market, in the heart of the Corridor, the city’s high-crime area. In the past two weeks, five black men were murdered over eight days. There have been 11 homicides in the city this year, 17 since October, 14 in the Corridor.
Tywan Turner wasn’t really the nephew of Mr. Abdussabur, a New Haven police officer who heads Ctribat Institute for Social Development, a gun violence prevention program that works with children in troubled New Haven neighborhoods, takes them camping in the summer, gives them a home beyond the streets. But Mr. Turner had been a beloved participant in the program, so his murder at age 19 felt like a death in the family. He had left a cookout at a friend’s house on Saturday, walked to the store for cigarettes and was shot at least four times. It was the second homicide that day.
“Awesome kid, a sweetheart, like my kids,” says Mr. Abdussabur, 43, who grew up in the neighborhood and ran track at the University of West Georgia. “Respectful, handsome, nice smile. Not a fighting kid, very laid back, very smart. Someone was in a dispute with his brother and retaliated against him.”"

Gov't accused of paying lip service to the gang problem

Gov't accused of paying lip service to the gang problem: "'Every time there is a shooting they have a press conference throw out a few ideas and that is the last we hear of them.' BDA MP Mark Pettingill said he had yet to see evidence of a co-coordinated action plan to deal with the problem. Both men suggested a cross-party working group be set up to look into the issue.
Mr. Moniz believes a task force of experts should be assembled to investigate Bermuda's gang problem and make recommendations. He added: 'They don't seem to have any clue or any political will to do anything. They say something about SWAT teams, nobody knows what it means and you never hear it mentioned again. They talk about sending prisoners abroad and they haven't discussed it with anybody at the U.S. Consulate or in the Governor's office."

His wife Patricia Popoca was sitting next to him. Her three children were in the back seat of the car. When Garcia parked, a man approached the car, opened the driver's door and produced a gun. Garcia, a former member of Barrio Mojados or the B.M.S. gang, pleaded with the man not to shoot him in front of his family to no avail. The man shot Garcia six to eight times and then walked away. Popoca did not see anyone other than the shooter. However, her 11-year-old child saw another man standing near the passenger side of the car, who fired his gun at the same time, before he fled. Garcia suffered six gunshot wounds and died. Popoca's leg was struck by a bullet that passed through her thigh. She was treated at the hospital.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department found expended cartridges at the site of the shooting, indicating three different kinds of guns had been fired at the time. No firearms were recovered. Popoca described the gun of the shooter she saw as a semiautomatic rather than a revolver."

Open Carry Gun Owners Speak Out - CBS 42

Open Carry Gun Owners Speak Out - CBS 42: "He’s got a gun in his holster and he's not ashamed to show it. 'Your crime rate is a hell of a lot higher in England. For everything less than murder, every single crime you can think of is higher in the UK: muggings, stabbings, thefts in general. All because people can't defend themselves, in my opinion” said David Smythies.Smythies grew up in England where guns are against the law. Now a U.S. resident, he's exercising his rights. 'Americans don't know what they could potentially lose if they didn't come out and exercise their right to open carry,” said Smythies.'It’s a right. The opencarry.org saying is 'A right unexercised is a right lost.’ You might as well exercise your right before it’s gone,” said Timothy Brand, who also wears his gun on his right hip for all to see. You may not realize it, but in Alabama, it's legal to carry a firearm openly in public. But the second you conceal it, you need a license. That’s why a group of open carry supporters joined forces Saturday afternoon, hoping to inform the community. Together, they held a blood drive off Lorna Road in Hoover."
